I've done both with my kids multiple times. Here's my honest breakdown by age group and budget.
I've taken my own kids to both parks multiple times, and I've helped hundreds of families plan their Florida vacations. Here's my honest breakdown.
Disney is unmatched for young children. The magic is real — character meet-and-greets, princess dining experiences, and rides designed for the whole family make it the gold standard for little ones. Magic Kingdom alone is worth the trip for kids under 10.
Best Disney Park by Age:
Once kids are old enough to ride the bigger attractions, Universal becomes incredibly exciting. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is genuinely magical for older kids and adults. The rides are more intense and thrilling than Disney's.
Disney is significantly more expensive. A family of four can easily spend $500–$800 per day at Disney when you factor in tickets, food, and extras. Universal is typically 20–30% less expensive and offers a 2-park pass that covers everything.
**Young kids (under 10):** Disney, no question. The experience is irreplaceable.
**Older kids and teens:** Universal, especially if they're Harry Potter fans.
**If you can only do one trip:** Disney Magic Kingdom is the classic choice. But if your kids are 10+, Universal gives you more thrills per dollar.
